Grumpy Guarantee

For many authors, hiring an editor can be a scary plunge into the unknown.

  • Will he understand what I’m trying to do?
  • Will she give me suggestions I can use?
  • Will I spend gobs of money and wind up with nada?

That’s why I offer my “Grumpy Guarantee”, which goes as follows:

If, for any reason, you feel “grumpy” about my critique and suggestions, you pay only the non-refundable advance AND NOTHING MORE.

This non-refundable advance is either $150 or 10% of the anticipated total, whichever is more.

Example One

You hire me to do a Bestseller Critique of 80,000 words. The full fee would be $0.012 x 80,000 = $960. Ten percent of that is $96, which is less than $150. So the non-refundable advance would be $150. If you exercised my Grumpy Guarantee, you would pay only that first $150, not the additional $810.

Example Two

You want me to do a Detailed Edit of your 125,000 word novel. The full fee would be $0.02 x 125,000 = $2500. Ten percent would be $250, which is larger than $150. Thus, the non-refundable advance would be $250. In activating my Grumpy Guarantee, you would pay only that inital $250, not the balance of $2250.

Caveat

Of course, it’s always better if the situation never reaches so far. If you want to see what my critique of your work would be like, you can always take advantage of my “free scene critique”, get a free sample of my editing style, or plunge directly into an Assessment of 30-50 (double-spaced) pages.
